


Houston’s elite children’s chamber orchestra, Virtuosi, had the opportunity to perform with the legendary singer and song writer Lee Greenwood at their annual Legends of the Future Gala. Lee Greenwood is most known for his “God Bless the USA” and other patriotic songs. This year Virtuosi students and Lee Greenwood chose to honor some of the bravest men in the country, the United States Armed Forces. A handful of honorees and guests were wine and dined and entertained by Greenwood and Virtuosi. It was an evening to remember!

Hosted by Rodolfo and Debbie Festari, Bice's first annual invitation-only Kentucky Derby kicked-off on May 6, to a large and fashionable crowd of 80. Race time started at 5-but true gamblers arrived early on to sip on Mint Julips, and sample bourbon balls made especially by Chef Julian. Beautiful hates were everywhere, and all guests were asked to pick a favorite horse and bet large-big winner was Barbaro, but the non-winners didn't mind, they stayed on and reveled until midnight. Recently, yours truly along with the "High-Tech Texan" Michael Garfield scooped ice cream at Ben & Jerry's in the Village to help raise money for Methodist Children's Hospital. The day was dedicated to celebrating Ben & Jerry's customer's with FREE ice cream all day. Of course, it was our job to scoop and encourage donations! Did we eat a lot of ice cream? You bet!

Commemorating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer survivors, along with their families and friends, helped "Lay The Foundation for a Cure" at an October 26 event organized by the Pink Ribbon House committee Messages of hope, wisdom and in memory of those who have lost their battle with breast cancer were inscribed on pink foundation boards used as the foundation was poured for the 2006 Pink Ribbon HouseSM. Houston's third Pink Ribbon HouseSM is a million-dollar Showhouse home in the Tanglewood area that is expected to raise over $500,000 for breast cancer research at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Over 200 people gathered at the Icon Hotel for intimate dinners and conversations with well known personalities from the world of the arts, medicine, sports, business, medicine and education. Proceeds from the dinners will benefit Neuhaus Education Center's teacher scholarship fund that provides professional development for teachers in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling. More than 31,000 teachers have benefited from the Center since its inception, impacting 2.5 million students. Chairs were Anne Stewart and Kendall Miller.


"Grand Slam" Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros and his wife, Cara, have teamed up with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo GALLOP Committee as honorary vice chairmen of the committee. Celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the 10,000 sq. ft Bellaire home drew thousand of visitors and raised more than $500,000 for the Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine.

The event featured a private concert with Willie Nelson and raised more than $350,000 for the International Rhino Foundation and Polo Players Support Group.

St. Joseph Hospital Foundation recently held its 37th Annual Gala, themed "Sentimental Journey", at the Westin Galleria Hotel. Events during the evening included presentation of the Bishop Claude M. Dubuis Award to the Charity Guild of Catholic Women for their many years of providing assistance to under privileged children and children's agencies in the Houston area.

At the VIP party opening of the Memorial City California Pizza Kitchen, "cut-ups" included, from left, co-chairs and ESCAPE volunteers Peggy and Kerry Mazoch , Gerald Franklin, and Joan Schnitzer Levy, who put ESCAPE on Houston's social map with her annual Celebrity Chef Benefit at Benihana. Always innovative, CPK turned the tables on a traditional ribbon cutting with a "pizza cutting" with VIPs manning the pizza wheels followed by a buffet California-style. Mazoch and Franklin are among the founders of ESCAPE, supported by the Exchange Clubs of Houston, beneficiary of Charity Day at the new CPK.
